CHAP logo

CHAP aims to create a coherent identity for Downend (we include Emersons Green in this), built around interesting or significant places, people and events from the past, and to share this with the local community through arts, publications, music and events.

Our goal is to build a sense of belonging and commitment to Downend, an understanding of its character, residents, businesses and visitors, and to enhance social cohesion between people of all ages and backgrounds through enjoyable and inclusive activities.

Animation

Watch this fun two-minute animation to see how Downend and Emersons Green has evolved over centuries from a wild deer forest owned by the king to today’s multicultural suburb of Bristol.

It depicts changes in livelihood - including living off the land to farming and mining. It shows  key places and people like St James's Church, the Horseshoe Inn, WG Grace, Cleve Hill House, and the Scout Memorial.

The animation was devised and written by CHAP, funded by Historic England, and made by local UWE Animation graduate Callum O'Sullivan.
